Virtual Desktop Infrastructure
Work anywhere thanks to virtual desktops
Table of contents
Hybrid working, distributed end devices, and increasing security requirements are putting more pressure on IT departments. A virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) centrally bundles desktops and applications and provides them securely across locations. We'll show you when VDI makes sense and which platform suits your use case.
Challenges in desktop operation
Five typical causes of additional effort, risks, and delays in distributed endpoint environments.
- High administrative overhead: Distributed endpoints, images, patches, and licenses tie up capacity.
- Security and compliance pressure: Data leakage, access rights, audits – heterogeneous endpoints make control difficult.
- Performance fluctuations: Data applications require predictable resources.
- Scaling and rollouts: New locations/projects are delayed by hardware and provisioning bottlenecks.
- User experience: Different end devices, latencies, and VPN bottlenecks slow down productivity.
VDI: The right answer to your desktop challenge
Operating systems, applications, and data run centrally in the data center or in a hybrid architecture. End devices now serve only as secure access points. The result: significantly lower operating costs, higher security, and predictable performance.

Your comprehensive solution for virtual desktops
Citrix XenDesktop is a virtual application and desktop solution in the form of a single, easy-to-implement platform. Access to company resources from mobile devices is supported by the bandwidth-optimized ICA protocol. Whether from their home office, at a customer appointment, or during a business trip, your employees can work anywhere with Citrix XenDesktop and XenApp. You have access to virtual desktops, Windows, Linux, web, and SaaS applications in HD performance via a cloud or your own data center. Application layering accelerates mobile working with Virtual PC. With Citrix, you also benefit from a high level of data security, which is guaranteed by the centralization of computing power in the data center.
Horizon VDI: On-premises and multi-cloud from a single source
As part of the Omnissa Platform, Horizon modernizes the delivery of desktops and applications and reduces operating costs: A cloud-based management layer allows you to control workloads uniformly across on-premises and multiple public clouds; DaaS functions take over platform operations so your team can focus on desktops and apps. The Horizon Blast Protocol ensures a consistent user experience even with high latency/low bandwidth and handles demanding graphics workloads. With flexible plans and pricing, one-stop shopping, and the choice of a market-leading provider trusted by tens of thousands of customers, you get efficiency, productivity, and predictable cost advantages—today and in the long term.
Your desktop virtualization for Windows
Microsoft Windows Remote Desktop Services (RDS) is a centralized desktop and application platform and a component of Microsoft Windows Server. Provide your employees with virtual desktops and applications through remote desktop clients, enabling them to work flexibly, no matter where they are. Use the standardized and cost-effective RDP protocol for an optimized user experience when accessing remote applications. The centralized platform also makes it easier for your IT department to manage desktops and applications, use practical thin clients, and ensure security in the data center.
Cloud VDI with cost control
Azure Virtual Desktop provides virtualized Windows 10/11 desktops and applications from the Azure Cloud. Microsoft operates the control layer, while you use host pools in globally available, protected regions and scale resources as needed. Windows multi-session and usage-based billing reduce costs; existing Windows/Microsoft 365 licenses can continue to be used.
Network options such as Azure Private Link and RDP Shortpath increase security and connection quality, while familiar Windows environments accelerate acceptance. In addition, AVD can be operated on Azure Local (Azure Stack HCI) – for data sovereignty, low latencies, and edge scenarios – and can be seamlessly integrated into our Azure Local offering.
