I posted this on the free for all part of medialine, but I figure posting it here couldn't hurt either...
I was just wondering if any of you have a job outside of tv that you do PT or in your spare time? I'm trying to find a way to make extra money on the side. My schedule is pretty flexible to a 2nd job.
I'm pretty restricted by my station as to having too public of a 2nd job so I was wondering if you have a second job or even any suggestions as something I could do.
Anyone know of no-scam on-line jobs?
Thank you for you help in advance!

I did Personal Training... with a two and four year old at home (not too mention a HIGH PAYING TV job - HA! ) I don't have the time or energy for a second job.
It's easier than you think to become certified and a lot of gyms offer paid training. Once you are certified, the pay is very nice, possibly $50/hour. AND, most people either want training in the early morning or evening making it nice for either AM or PM weather shift.

Would you be able to work in retail if it is doing stock...not out front and visible to the public? If you can work somewhere where you can get a discount, that's a bonus.

I worked in a local government office doing some data entry, but I also tried to go the route of using my current talents to make money: Selling weather forecast services (never really resulting in anything) and also doing videography of high school shows/talent shows and the like (it helped that I have A LOT of friends in theater finding someone who might want/need someone to record a show was easy.)
I know some on this board have done the stockroom thing.
Is there anything inhouse you can do to make more money? PT photog? Sales Assistant? Web Design?

Does your station know you are looking? Maybe if you come to them and let them know your situation then they may be able to work with getting you into sales, or doing extra work around the station for eating money....

yep the stock room at Eddie Bauer, oh the good old days I had fun though and met cool folks.
Perhaps something where you aren't too visible, I wonder if they have anything at like the post office, that seems neat, or like tvwxguy said, the gym, a cool place too.
There's probably a lot of options but yeah you'll have to talk to them and tell them what you need and why you are doing that, it's usually a big production with the boss. IMHO.

Honestly, do TV station care anymore if nonessential (or even essential) workers have part time jobs to make it through? Embarrassing to the station, nothing. Isn't it now part of the business model?

Thanks to tvwxguy's advice, I am doing a little PT on the side. This is a quick and fairly low cost start up job. I got a new TV gig working weekends which leaves me with 4 (yes 4) days a week with nothing to do. I kept the gym job to curb my boredom. Work in the mornings and home by lunch. Its Easy Cheese IMHO. A catch.. it helps if you are in at least okay physical condition to start.

I substitute teach on my days off, and sometimes teach halfdays. I enjoy it a lot!

This should be a sign to all of you in school hoping to strike it rich in TV. I'm not trying to discourage anyone but the reality is "The Ron Burgandy Days" are over. Not only that, it takes a lot to support a family these days. Think about what other skills you have and put them to work. I know a lot of people working two jobs and I'm one of them.

I mentioned in the other thread that I have some small stuff on the side, but, in general, WXYZ is right.
Of course, I once had a co-worker whose financial plan was something like this:
1. Donate plasma for $50/week. 2. Take that money to the casino 3. Repeat frequently 4. Retire
Last I heard, he was still working on it. ![[Smile]](smile.gif)

I have a side business and own a really cool product.
www.tote-um-gear.com
I am looking for distributors. If you have bait and tackle stores (and I am sure you do)around area lakes....you can make up to $50 an account you land....the $$$ keeps coming in for all re-orders. I have some guys making some good bank.
This is a perfect time of the year to sell...XMAS is just around the corner.
PM me for more info.

Anybody close to my age who frequents this forum has hopefully acknowledged that reality, but it doesn't hurt to reiterate it.
It's a good thing a loaf of bread and a package of lunch meat can last quite a few days... ![[Smile]](smile.gif)
