TWENTYNINE PALMS, Calif. (AP) - December 22, 2006 - The actor who played Lionel Jefferson on "The Jeffersons" and "All in the Family" has died.

His niece says Mike Evans died of throat cancer last week at his mother's home in Twentynine Palms, California. He was 57.

Evans started playing Lionel in "All in the Family" and he kept the role for the spinoff, "The Jeffersons" -- though he was replaced by another actor for part of that run.

Evans also co-created and wrote for "Good Times."

Of the original cast of "The Jeffersons," only Sherman Hemsley (George), Berlinda Tolbert (Jenny) and Paul Benedict (Mr. Bentley) now survive.

Marla Gibbs (Florence) is also still around but I don't think she became a cast member until a few episodes into the first season.

For those who need a visual reminder.

A word of warning. I went to Google to find an image of Mike Evans and when I typed in his name a number of images of other Mike Evans' came up including a very disturbing and gruesome photo of the Mike Evans who was beheaded in Iraq. This photo (just sitting there on google) showed the man just after he had been beheaded, bloody and graphic with his head sitting in the middle of his back. Wow. That image will stay with me for a long, long time.

Yes.

Mike Evans was the first, playing the role on All in the Family and The Jeffersons. He was replaced by Damon Evans (no relation) when Mike became busy overseeing "Good Times." Mike came back to The Jeffersons from 1979-1981.

I did a Google (or Yahoo!) image search on 'moron' or 'idiot'... and some scary stuff popped up.

REAL SCARY.

I think I posted one of the pics here about 10 months ago.
