Kelly was definitely rude to Clay through that entire segment. She purposely wouldn't let him get a word in. I'd say she's too big for her britches. What he did was a normal reaction, and well-deserved, although I can't blame her for not wanting an icky hand on her mouth.

Her complaining to Regis afterward was WAY snotty and out of line. Regis, in his friendly way, tried to defend Aiken.

Rosie's an idiot.

Ripa-Aiken-O'Donnell feud nipped by Walters

November 22, 2006

By JOHN SMYNTEK
FREE PRESS STAFF WRITER

Barbara Walters nipped that possibly blossoming Kelly Ripa/Clay Aiken/Rosie O'Donnell feud in the bud.

Opening the Wednesday version of "The View," (11 a.m. weekdays) Walters said Ripa and O'Donnell, who clashed on Tuesday's show over a mouth-covering incident on "Live with Regis and Kelly" involving Aiken spoke again off the air and everybody was happy! (Walters had Tuesday off.)

O'Donnell later in the show said she spoke with Aiken and was apparently satisfied no homophobia on Ripa's part was taken by the singer who was subbing for Regis Philbin.

Well Rosie definitely "outed" Clay by saying to the other Viewettes that "She (Kelly) wouldn't haven't said that to a straight man."

So while Clay may have tried to stay in the closet, Rosie reached her hand in and yanked him out!

[Mad] Did any of you see on Entertainment Tonight last night... a clip was pulled of Kelly Ripa putting her hand over Regis' mouth... just like Aiken did to her?

I can hear her excuse now... "well, we know each other! He's not a stranger!"

'ho. [Whistle]

Kelly said you don't put yoru hand over someone's mouth "when they are conducing an interview." She did this to Regis when he was making fun of her or something, not conducting an interview.

As for the homophobe end of things, give me a freakin' break. Get the F over it Rosie and everyone else. She said it becasue she doesn't like Clay Aiken. If she didn't like Brad Pitt, she'd say it to him, too. It wasn't about being gay, or being a man, but Clay being a tool. She clearly does not like him or respect him.

She said you shouldn't put your hand over someone's mouth when they're conducting an interview.. that was only one of her excuses. She also said:

1. "Honey I don't know where that hand's been"
2. "It's flu season, I have kids..."

In addition, she was not talking when Aiken put his hand over her mouth. He was trying to get a question in before she had a chance to grab the reins (sp?) again.

Root, a friendly disagreement.. I know you live in my old neck of the woods..

Thumbs up, bride.

I still think people are just way too sensitive---not you, but Rosie and the people who made commens on youtube. You should read those.

I also don't want people putting their hands near my mouth out of fear of hepatitis. WHat if he doesn't wash after he goes?

Those things are nice, but advertisers don't buy spots based on hype.

They buy spots based on the ratings numbers.

Are the overnights up for the show?

If not, all the buzz you want won't make it a successful sweeps stunt.

But Ripa has forgotten ONE thing -- when you have a guest host, it's the same as having a guest in your home.
Your job is to make them feel comfortable -- SHE should have been the gracious hostess and not letting him ask a question ISN'T being gracious.
If Aiken is a "tool", she simply has to grin and bear it -- that's why she gets the big bucks. He's there for ONE day -- and if there is no chemistry -- the time to complain about it is AFTER the show -- to the producers -- IN PRIVATE!
She says, "Well, we don't know each other." Fine -- then since YOU are the one familar with the show, you need to HELP the guest host as much as possible. Otherwise, you end up with situations like this.

Yes, I know that's "old school", but so am I -- the "guest host" is still a GUEST. And should be treated as such.

IF that's the case -- it's gone UNBELIEVABLY wrong -- so we can emphasize the word "cheap".

Whatever happened to using one's imagination and creating a clever stunt that didn't seem to border (or cross into) stupidity and crassness?

Well put, Ryder. Ripa was acting like an immature prom queen snob. She was dripping with condescension toward Aiken.

I agree with both of these assessments. I am in now way condoning Ripa, but the reasons behind it I think are that she just doesn't like Clay to tool, not that he's gay.

I'll buy THAT.

It sounds like Rosie is way off-base here regarding the motivation -- but, that doesn't excuse Ripa one iota for her behavior.

I agree. It had nothing to do with Aiken's homosexuality. He should be pissed at Rosie for exposing him the way she did. (I don't follow Aiken at all, so I don't know if he was "out" already.)

Well, I don't think there was ever an "official announcement" -- but he wasn't fooling anybody. I mean, Kathy Griffin has a 5-7 minute routine about him and him not 'officially being gay even though everybody knows he is' in her act.

Exactly! Kelly complained to Regis afterward that Clay didn't show her any "southern hospitality" or "respect." When was respect shown to him by her? Even when he tried to make light of her ignoring him by saying, "you let me know when I can get in here..." She didn't even acknowledge him. She put up her hand and continued talking to Emmit and his partner. That was the rudest bit of behavior I saw in that entire clip; much ruder than him putting his hand over her mouth. I did watch Regis and Kelly yesterday because I was off and wanted to see if the dissing would continue. Regis tried to bring it up a few times and Kelly gave him a death look each time. I think she realizes that she didn't come out looking like the victim in this situation and wants it all to go away. I think Rosie was out of line but I also think Kelly's line did allude to his homosexuality more than "it's cold and flu season." I think that because of the way she said it and because she added the word "honey" at the end of it. I'm not a fan of either Kelly or Clay and it wasn't a situation where one has to choose sides but if I were to choose, I'd side with Clay. After the show when he was asked what he thought he was gracious and said it was all fun. He has said nothing to put Kelly in a bad light while she used the show to do just that to him, out of his presence. Bad form and juvenile to boot.

Yeah, I'd say it backfired on her. When she discussed it with Regis (the next day??) it seemed like she expected applause from the studio audience when she explained how wrong it was to put one's hand over another's mouth during an interview. She didn't get a bit of applause. Yes, she was GLARINGLY rude during the interview with the dancing couple. As I said, she's a little too big for her britches.

The question is.. WHY do I care about this so much? [Confused]

Very well said indeed! Nothing to do with "old school." Just proper manners. If Kelly is going to preach about manners, then she should practise what she preaches. (And I say this as one who really likes Kelly).
