My contract up late summer, major limbo here,
Cant send out tapes, 9 months to far out. I chatted with my boss, 50 - 50 if they will renew.
Station in a mess, I guess just gather tapes and be ready, send out tapes when 4 months left on contract. Do you folks agree? Too bad I cant get an answer, life on hold. Thanks

Given your situation, why do you think 9 months out is too early to send tapes?

I'd have sent out a bunch already. It's NEVER too early to send out tapes.

Go. They either want and value you or they don't. There's no such thing as 50 50.

They want to employ you, and that's 100 percent. Or they don't. that's zero.

50 50 is a gentle way of saying it's zero.

Is that what you talked about? Whether or not they will renew your contract? And they told you 50/50 or is that just a guess?

I'd start sending out tapes now. If you get a job (which will probably be several months from now), take it and leave.

Are you kidding?

Sounds like your station is self destructing all around you and your situation is as well, given the ambivalence of your boss.

Start sending now. If you get lucky off the bat, you're in a position to go back to the ND and ask him/her to either secure your future there or let you pursue it somewhere else.

Another benefit of sending tapes out is that you'll learn if your tape is working. If people call, even if it turns out you can't leave, you'll at least know that there is interest in your work. If you send out tapes and hear nothing, you still have time to polish your tape.

Send tapes to people you know in the business. Solicit their feedback. Ask them to pass it on.

Nine months will fly by faster than you realize. Don't wait for signs telling you what to do. If your description is accurate, the message is already clear. Get going.

Agree, there's no 50-50. Sounds to me like he/she knows the station is in turmoil, and doesn't want to flat out say it. Send tapes now...that 50-50 line is such a line of crap. Also sounds like a place you wouldn't want to work in even if it were 100%.

It is NEVER TOO EARLY to send tapes out. Based on management's answer and considering how long it usually takes to get a job, I'd be sending them out faster than Paper Trail can copy and paste something off the wire. A good solid job hunt takes 6 months. Unless you're the next Murrow or Cronkite, you should be sending out tapes as soon as possible.

Thanks for all the advice, trust me when I say it's a mess, good people are being treated very badly, it's sad, very sad to see hard working people treated like dirt. Wish I could say, tell more, but for now, I can't. We will rise above the ashes, THANKS.
