CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) - The American singer and activist Harry Belafonte called President Bush "the greatest terrorist in the world" on Sunday and said millions of Americans support the socialist revolution of Venezuelan leader Hugo Chavez.

Belafonte led a delegation of Americans including the actor Danny Glover and the Princeton University scholar Cornel West that met the Venezuelan president for more than six hours late Saturday. Some in the group attended Chavez's television and radio broadcast Sunday.

"No matter what the greatest tyrant in the world, the greatest terrorist in the world, George W. Bush says, we're here to tell you: Not hundreds, not thousands, but millions of the American people ... support your revolution," Belafonte told Chavez during the broadcast.

The 78-year-old Belafonte, famous for his calypso-inspired music, including the "Day-O" song, was a close collaborator of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and is now a UNICEF goodwill ambassador. He also has been outspoken in criticizing the U.S. embargo of Cuba.

Chavez said he believes deeply in the struggle for justice by blacks, both in the U.S. and Venezuela.

"Although we may not believe it, there continues to be great discrimination here against black people," Chavez said, urging his government to redouble its efforts to prevent discrimination.

Belafonte accused U.S. news media of falsely painting Chavez as a "dictator," when in fact, he said, there is democracy and citizens are "optimistic about their future."

Dolores Huerta, a pioneer of the United Farm Workers labor union also in the delegation, called the visit a "very deep experience."

Chavez accuses Bush of trying to overthrow him, pointing to intelligence documents released by the U.S. indicating that the CIA knew beforehand that dissident officers planned a short-lived 2002 coup. The U.S. denies involvement, but Chavez says Venezuela must be on guard.

Belafonte suggested setting up a youth exchange for Venezuelans and Americans. He finished by shouting in Spanish: "Viva la revolucion!"

Chavez also apparently said nothing about the great discrimination in the US against Latinos. He also failed to mention the discrimination against the native inhabitants of both countries. Interestingly, he also forgot to mention the discrimination suffered in the US against certain groups of white people - Jews, Gypsies, Irish - simply because of their racial background. My guess? He sees Harry Belafonte & Co. and sees that they're all black. So he doesn't mention the skin colours of the remainder of the population. Thanks, Chavez.

I support Chavez's revolution. I just wish that the Bush Administration would stop fencing its contribution to that revolution through China by using "defence expenditures" as its excuse.

Please, if that last bit of sarcasm slipped by anyone, please let me know.

Belafonte is to the left what Pat Robertson is to the right. Both morons...although Robertson is Yale educated and has a PHD..and was a Marine. Doesn't give him a free pass and belting out hits a few decades ago doesn't allow Belafonte to walk free here either. He's an idiot.

Harry Belafonte has his own broadcast network and rakes in millions a year spreading lies about christianity?
Really?
Last I heard he was a retired calypso dude that makes a few speeches and says some stupid things once in a blue moon.
To equate the two is a stretch.
One has millions of followers and an outlet and spews every 3 months...the other, no one is listening to, won't get as much play from his stupid comments and doesn't control a multi-million dollar empire that tells people how to vote!

Albeit, what Belefonte said is stupid...but it's not on the same level as Robertson.

What a dopey statement.
Belafonte is a nearly forgotten musician who wrote a goofy song about a banana boat 40+ years ago.

Robertson has millions of impressionable, extremist television viewers clinging on his every word every night.

The only comparison is that they're morons who make ridiculous statements. Seriously, I think it's sad that people like your grandmother think Robertson walks on water. But before you dismiss Belefonte as a nobody...remember that Al-Jazeera and every anti-american country around the world will be showing that soundbite. And don't worry...he'll probably have his own Air America show soon.

So you're saying that Belefonte and Robertson are not extremist morons? That was the original point...the one that people agreed with. It was a statement that there are fringe cooks on both sides of the political spectrum. How you can disagree with that is incredible.

The point in "comparing" Robertson and Belafonte is that there are kooks on both extremes. Perhaps you missed that. Or perhaps you think Belafonte isn't an extremist.

Harry Belafonte isn't on TV every day but he is far from being forgotten, despite the fact that he hasn't had a hit in decades. He has continued singing and acting and has been very active in several left-wing causes, as well as a lot of work for the UN.

I stand by what I said. The comparison in the previous post was on the money.

I guess, on some level, posters like Kace and Poppy have no problem with the content of Belafonte's comments.
As for his influence, Belafonte was one of AARP's "People of the Year" so I guess Robertson is not alone in his poisoning of the elderly minds in America!

It's not a matter of having a problem with he said or not. It's a matter of valuing Belafonte's opinion to begin with.

And I'll admit: it didn't occur to me that Belafonte was really addressing the AARP while talking to Chavez in Venezuela.

I guess, on some level, there are posters who are defending Harry Belafonte and what he said.

This isn't his first asinine statement. He has a history of ridiculous remarks. This one just got more news coverage than most of the prevous statements. He has received a pass for a long time because he is perceived as "thoughtful," a "humanitarian," and the like because of his activism.

He's just a celebrity who doesn't know what he's talking about.

Once again, Kace continues to defend this moron. It's sad that we can't even agree that Belafonte's statement was ridiculous.
My favorite was "Not hundreds, not thousands, but MILLIONS of Americans support your socialist regime." That is of course in addition to the: "Bush is the biggest terrorist in the world".
Too bad "millions" of Venezualans don't support his regime. 75 percent of them didn't even vote in the last election.
For the record, Harry is also a big fan of Castro...who is a good buddy of Chavez. Nice company.

Kace, you're right. Sorry but your lack of condemnation for Belafonte's remarks was taken as defense of them. As it turns out you just sit back and rip on people who agree with the opinion that his (Belafonte's) statement was idiotic and that he and Robertson represent radical elements. So...do you have an opinion?

If it's a matter of absolutely needing my opinion, DeNunzio I think Belafonte's off the mark. I also think Pat Robertson's an attention seeker. Ultimately their opinions mean nothing to me, thus I don't feel the need to join in on the Hit Parade.

No, it's clear you cannot read. I've said nothing about Kace's remarks. I stand by what I have said about Harry Belafonte. Even the left-leaning AARP, which recently praised Harry, has condemned his latest crazy remarks.
I'm not sure who is in charge of keeping Diplomat's enemy list, but could you please add the AARP if it is not already there?

If it's a matter of absolutely needing my opinion, DeNunzio I think Belafonte's off the mark.
Off the mark Kace? How about off the reservation? To say their opinions mean nothing to you is interesting....why would you bother reading the thread? As a father of multiple kids I promise you what they say has no direct impact on my life either...it's the debate and legitimate exchange of ideas that I find appealing.

I am NOT saying I agree with Belafonte (or Chavez, Roberston, Castro or Kace).

But can someone just make an effort to explain why George Bush should at least be considered the "greatest terrorist in the world" By his own admission his "war" in Iraq has killed 30-thousand Iraqi CIVILIANS... and 2,200 American Servicemen and Women. Now you may not consider that the act of a terrorist (I for one do not) BUT many many people who live outside the United States don't see a difference between what Osama did to US and what we are doing to Iraq.

So go ahead, make your case.
