We had some cool hole punch cloud formations today. This picture was taken right outside our building. We have a bunch more on our weather blog.

Here is one from my neck of the woods...

Very cool indeed. First time I've seen this in person.

Nice shots fellas. I saw them but was removed from my digital cam. Actually, mine weren't perfect holes like those, but were more elongated. They were awesome, and certainly hole punch clouds.

I am assuming that jets and air traffic produce the condensation nucleii for these holes to form. Some climbing through the cloud deck to reach flight altitude produce the holes while the longer streaks are from flights staying at that cloud level for an extended time.
That's the explanation, no?

Spotted them here in south Louisiana too. Only about 2 of them, but that was the first time I have ever seen them! Pretty neat!

LOL. Heard on Coast To Coast AM yesterday morning on the way to work this topic being discussed. Appearantly, it's the result of alien space ships.

Okay, so I looked at the Green Bay sight for their "Hole-Punch 101" info and pics. I was gonna use that in a school the other day until I saw the image of the two next to eachother. It looked like a 50 year old woman's mamagram!!! ![[Eek!]](eek.gif)

"Hot spots" due to fire activity (as determined by shortwave IR channel MODIS imagery) -- note the tiny grey smoke plumes drifting southward from some of those hot spots. [ January 31, 2007, 10:10 AM: Message edited by: sbachmeier ]
