Did you get the email about the new vacation policy!?!?! Let me be the first to praise a company for doing something for the employees. I know we (myself included) can sometimes focus on the negative, but this is just too cool. For those who haven't seen yet, the old policy was as follows....
5 years of service - 3 weeks vac. 15 years of service - 4 weeks vac.
Now it's.....
3 years - 3 weeks 10 years - 4 weeks 20 years - 5 weeks
I now get 3 weeks!! YEEHAH!!!!
OK, I'm done.

Don't get too excited...the next hurdle will be almost impossible with MG! They are starting a nice little trend of gradually getting rid of the "long time" on-air weather people. Ask some of the "older" folks in other MG stations. (And NO...I am not one of them.)
This is just smoke and mirrors. Yes, perhaps some of off camera and print folks might benefit from this...but not the higher paid on-air talent. Your worth goes down dramatically when you start costing them too much.
Besides...you think you would want to work for MG even 10 years? And if so, is it worth 4 weeks of vacation? ![[Confused]](confused.gif)

I really hope you are wrong about that. I can think of several MG weather veterans that I would HATE to see lose their jobs. ![[Frown]](frown.gif)

From what I hear that trend is a real possibility. I know some younger mets who's Vets are wary of the change. From a former MG guy to those there now...be careful and always be ready for them to come in and say "thanks but I think we are going to go in another direction". I've heard the horror stories, but haven't been wronged, or seen those around me have any problems that wouldn't come up with any other ownership group. Anyway, isn't that where this whole business is headed, young and cheap? Thank God I'm still both.

Yep. This is not all good news. It is their way of "paying you more" opposed to them paying you more... make sense?
..They would rather pay in time off than actual money. Usually a sign a company is underperforming... or perhaps a company that may be faced with huge digital expenses the next few years.
And for anybody in this business who makes good dough... be very wary. Don't spend it all... start saving for some day you might be caught totally off guard.

There's the key. If you are in the position to make enough to where your job is threatened, you'd better damn sure save some coin, and of course, always have a back up plan. Now, with respect to them giving more time off instead of money, I would actually rather an extra week off than say a 2% boost in pay. Of course I would rather have a boatload more money, but the time off while my kids are young, and with my family so far away is priceless. I'm not a fool, I'm just optimistic. I guess I'm an optimist who knows in the back of his mind that he could be canned at any second. What a combo! [ December 14, 2006, 09:36 AM: Message edited by: sandwichpick ]

Speaking from experience, I think there are worse companies to work for right now. I hear Belo is cutting back. Look at what is happening with Tribune and Granite! And, Clear Channel is selling all of their stations because they have overextended themselves. With that overextension several Chief's working for Clear Channel have been given their walking papers for no valid reason.
So, even if Media General or any other company is cutting back or appears to be posturing to cut back, I have to tell you, there are probably other companies out there that are in worse shape.
Also, about preparing for the worst and saving money. I can't agree more. Start today. Don’t wait until it is too late. The next 10 years will see convergence of TV, Internet, Webcasting, 24 hour weather channel's and a host of things we can't imagine today. Becoming proficient at as many of them as is possible will help with the job security. I'm still pumped about the future, but I see a lot of work ahead.
All of us must be prepared for the possibility that a new owner or a change of management that could bring an end to our tenure. Much of the Clear Channel changes are emanating from Broadcast Image Group and a Clear Channel senior VP over News. They are looking to clear out higher salaries (not just Chief’s) to make the bottom line look good for the sale of all of their TV stations.
But, to be blunt to myself and to others out there...that is the TV news business and you better be prepared for it to happen, because it will to each of us someday.
Like I said, there are worse companies to work for than Belo, Hearst or Media General. It is all in your perspective.
Later...
