Kind of slow tonight.

It's mild weather, but 1 1/2 hours into I figured I'd be out of candy. No where close. I still have Whoppers, Reeces, Snickers and Milky Ways left.

I've seen four Spider-Mans (3 red, 1 black) lots of princesses. No Harry Potters. 2 skate boarders. So far no costumes that made me say "Oh, that's clever." Very few homemade... mostly store bought.

I have the smoke machine going, the fake caultron of fire and four Jack O Lanterns.

How is it in your neighborhood?

I bought 1/2 dozen bags for the expected onslaught on Saturday. Three children came. So. I saved the rest for tonight, the real Halloween. So far no one has rung my doorbell. What am I going to do with all this chocolate? I hate chocolate!

I think the problem is that kids these days aren't used to WALKING.

I had about 60 trick-or-treaters, mostly under age 12. The tiny ones were the cutest (including a 4-month-old in a horsey suit, in a snugli, an 18-month-old dog and a 2-year-old cat). Lots of superheroes (mostly boys) and the usual smattering of princesses and ballerinas. Four tween girls were a very cute band of gypsies, and the zombie cheerleader was the most original (she was about ten). One Gandalf (the White), a soldier in camo with great face paint, and a cute little girl Spongebob.

None of the "slutty" looks on girls that have been making the news, I'm relieved to say. Much politeness, too, not all of it prompted. And lots of the little girls liked my shoulder-dusting skeleton earrings.

I overbought candy but will take the leftovers to the office. I didn't have time to carve a pumpkin this year, but it was a good Halloween anyway.

We ran out of candy right as things were dying down, so that was good.

Several Spider-Man costumes, lots of karate/ninja guys.

One kid was in a Batman Beyond costume. That cartoon hasn't been on the air for 6 years!

One Darth Vader, who was impressed when I said "And a Kit Kat for the dark lord of the Sith."

Harry Potters
Chickens
Pirates
Princesses
A robot who looked tired of carrying a robot costume around

As the father of a child who is too small to eat all that candy, some advice: enough with the tootsie rolls. I feel like Homer Simpson when he said, "sometimes I have feelings too. Like my stomach hurts..."

We ran out of candy, got some more and ran out of that.

The most kids we've seen so far in the 3 years we have been in this house.

Maybe you could take it to some of your co-workers. Or maybe there is a rest home or senior citizens center near where you live. Take it over there and spread goodwill and make some new friends. In my city, several of the hospitals have snack baskets in family waiting areas that are filled by churches and civic groups. Perhaps there's also one near you.

No real action here to speak of.
The candy didn't move, but I was able to unload a package of beef Top Ramen, a box chicken soup and a slice of pizza, pepperoni, original style.
Love my granddaughter.
She raided that candy bowl, but was more happy for the ramen and chicken soup.
My son raided the candy bowl and took all of the Milky Way minibars.
No worries, I'll take whats left to work and the vultures in the newsroom will take care of the remaining Kit-Kat and Crunch minibars.

For the record, I live in a very large apt complex and not ONE trick or treater stopped by...go figure.

Weather was lousy here - we live in a stretch of town with no sidewalks. Not one child came to the door. (It's our first year in this house - we should have listened to the neighbors when they said "Oh, we stopped buying the candy years ago.")

My neighbrhood always look slike that scene from ET when they go out trick or treating---kids in costumes everywhere. For about an hour the action is non stop action. 3/4 of the kids don't even live in the neighborhood but immigarte in for the night. That doesn't bother me, but what does is that the parents are too freakin lazy to walk so they all drive their cars through the neighborhood making it very dangerous.

My one son was Elvis, daughter was a jazz dancer and my little guy was a dead baseball player. He looked pretty cool.

About 200 kids at my house. Wife had to make an extra candy run. My son went as a froggy. He was really good. He would go up to the house, say trick or treat, then hop and do a few "ribbits" for the house, take the candy, say thank you and move on. He only lasted about 10 houses though... that's a lot of work for a two year old!

Best costume was a father and son team... kid was dressed as a football player, the dad was dressed as OSU head coach Jim Tressell, complete with the sweater vest, tie, headset and playbook. It was great! He talked football with me for five minutes, thanked me for my input and said he was going to take my thoughts into consideration. It was just like a Tressell press conference!

I almost wonder if some of the slowdown in recent years is the popularity of big trick-or-treat events like at malls, etc. Either they weren't around that much 15-20 years ago or my folks just ignored them and we went around our neighborhood. I think people have gotten so paranoid that their kid will get kidnapped by some sex offender down the street. I don't recall that being a problem when I was a kid. What are people becoimg these days? Driving instead of walking? I wanted to go smack someone at a local TV station here because they did some huge sensationalized story about how you should be aware of everyone because they could be a sex offender and that you shouldn't trust anyone anymore. The way the story was written and the soundbite taken from the local police was a tone of "you just shouldn't trick-or-treat on the street anymore" and go to the mall. We took my kids 3 different places. I'll admit 2 were bigger organized events but we still took them around the neighborhood and didn't worry about trouble at all.

I was amazed last night by how many lazy POS parents "took" their kids trick or treating by dropping them off at the corner then driving down the street @ 10 mph stopping and starting and screwing up traffic.

New house, new neighborhood, new city so we didn't know what to expect. Had about 30 kids from the neighborhood. NO parents following in cars. But parents did walk with groups of kids.

It was my son's first Halloween and we dressed him as a little monkey. I don't think he cared either way, being only 12 weeks old. [Smile]

Are there any stories of kids that were kidnapped by sex offenders last night? I mean really, we oversensationalize so much in the media. If a sex offender was going to 'strike' he's not going to yank a trick-or-treater into the house on a whim. So easy to track down where the child disappeared by interviewing neighbors...etc. This is not to say people shouldn't exercise caution, but our country is becoming overly paranoid.

Oh...and I haven't heard about any razorblades or needles found in candy recently either. [Roll Eyes]

While we're talking candy, how did the whole trend of calling Reese's products "Reesees" get started?

I think it may have been started by the same person who began calling those drink-can holders, cozies, "koozies."

Not one at our house.

My sister said there were a lot of adults that came to the door trick or treating. Not a lot of kids, just grown people! What's with that?

Pretty good night at our house. Wife said we had around 50 kids (hey we live in a real small town!). Weather was excellent. My daughter hooked up with a few of her friends (12-13yrs.) and we WALKED about 2 miles total. Also ran into the car driving folks.

One lady would park her car, get out walk her toddler to the house then get in drive down two houses and do it again. At one point I heard her telling the kid not to crowd and stare and while walking back to the car, she was not quite yelling but talking loud, said 'I don't want you doing that sh!t.' I told her there was no need to talk like that around all the children . . . her reply 'I'll talk how I God Dam! feel like!' Great example she was making . . .

What a stupid I am.

He went as a froggy! Thanks for pointing out that I'm an idiot Wacowx. I've since corrected the post to be accurate.

Stupid, stupid, stupid.

As far as sex offenders go, we have a old guy down the street that reminds me of the old pervert on Family Guy. He was passing out candy this year, saw my son and says "He's about two and a half, right?" A little creepy.

Everytime I see him, I think, "Hey, I've got some popsicles down in my basement. You can have as many as you like..just come on down and get some.... Get your fat A$$ back here!"

I envy everybody who got to walk kids around. I used to take my nieces about the neighborhood. Their parents would be worn out from hosting a mad wild afternoon Halloween party. [Wink] But my nieces are all in college now. Time does pass.

Driving kids around? Never heard of it. These parents today. [Roll Eyes]

Walked a group of kids around the neighborhood last night. After we got home, my daughter stayed with me on the porch to hand out more candy to the later waves.

She told me handing out the candy was more fun than getting it. I was so proud of her.

Here's the gang from last night:
 -

From the left,
- Grace from up the street, as a Hershey's Kiss
- Ryan (my boy) as Spider-Man
- Laura (my girl) dressed as a kitty-cat
- Patrick from up the street, as a skeletal-mummy
- Emily from up the street, as a ballerina

It was a fun little tribe, and at every stop, Laura and Emily said "This is the BEST Halloween EVER!", and Patrick held up his bucket and said "I got MORE!"

Beats the hell out of the past years, when I was either carrying them or pulling them in a wagon.

Guy across the street had a "house of evil" going on, so that brought in people from all over the neighborhood.

Saw adult "wonder woman", cheerleaders, spider-man, gangstas, princesses, pirates, cavewomen, and the usual teenagers who don't dress up and just ask for candy.

Had one 7-year old dressed up as "spa woman" complete with robe, slippers, and an avacado mask on her face. Very clever!
