NEW NEWS DIRECTOR OPENING:

KSEE-TV, Fresno, CA...while this is technically not a new opening, we did want to call attention to this position as the station is running a paid ad in this newsletter. The job has been vacant since August, when GEOFF ROTH left to pursue a teaching career at Hofstra Univeristy. KSEE is an NBC affiliate and is owned by Granite.

NEW NEWS DIRECTORS NAMED:

WSFL-TV, Ft. Lauderdale/Miami, FL...as we reported earlier this week, KERRI CAVANAUGH has been named ND for this Tribune-owned independent station here. Kerri has been an EP for WFTS-TV in Tampa and has also worked in West Palm Beach and Tuscaloosa, AL. At WSFL, she replaces JOSE SUAREZ who left the station in September after nine months as ND. WSFL airs a morning news program in conjunction with Tribune's Sun-Sentinel newspaper.

WCNC-TV, Charlotte, NC...we also told you earlier this week that CORRIE HARDING will be the next ND for this Belo-owned NBC affiliate. Corrie's spent the last 4+ years as ND for Cox's WPXI-TV in Pittsburgh. He's also worked in Washington, Dallas, Cleveland, and Columbus, OH. At WCNC, he replaces MARY ALVAREZ who was named EP of Local Programming at the station after four years as ND and more than nine at the station.

WKRG-TV, Mobile, AL...veteran ND MIKE RAUSCH will start next month as the new ND for this Media General-owned CBS affiliate. Mike's been an ND in Portland, OR (twice), Orlando, Louisville, Rochester, NY. He's also worked in Ft. Wayne, Nashville, Little Rock, and Buffalo. Mike's been out of the TV business since 2006 when he started his own on-line training company. The move reunites him with GM JOE GOLENIOWSKI...they worked together at WHAS-TV in Louisville. At WKRG-TV, he replaces DAN CATES who left the station in May after 10 years as ND, when he was named ND at sister-Media-General station WSPA-TV in Spartansburg, SC.

WBBJ-TV, Jackson, TN...we're a little late in reporting that ROBERT DAVIDSON is the new ND for this Bahakel owned ABC affiliate. Robert is the former ND for WTVA-TV in Tupelo. He replaces BRAD GRANTHAM who left the station in September to return to Louisiana for personal reasons.

METEOROLOGIST PAUL HEGGEN JUMPS NBC O&O WSMV in Nashville from the FOX affiliate in Tulsa. Heggen joins WSMV as weekday morning weather anchor. Paul is a graduate of Texas A&M University and the University of Denver.

WHAM-TV, Rochester, NY…STEVE DAWE is leaving this Newport Television owned ABC affiliate to become Director of Multi-Media Engagement for WXXI-TV, the PBS affiliate in Rochester. Steve’s been the ND here for more than three years, and was the station’s promotion director before that. Before he joined WHAM, he was the ND for WUHF-TV, the FOX affiliate in Rochester.

KIDK-TV, Idaho Falls, ID…this Fisher Broadcasting owned CBS affiliate is looking for a new ND to replace TED DAWSON, who’s held that job since November. Ted had been the Sports Director there before he was promoted to ND. Earlier in his career, Ted anchored sports for two different Los Angeles stations.

NEW NEWS DIRECTORS NAMED:

WNJU-TV, Teterboro, NJ…JOSE MORALES has been named VP/News for the Telemundo o-and-o. He’s been Director of Digital Content for Telemundo Local Media. His first job was in that market as a part-time photographer. He was promoted to Director of Photography in 2005 and bumped to Managing Editor in 2007. He’s also worked in Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Green Bay, and Columbia, MO. At WUSA, he replaces longtime Gannett newsman LANE MICHAELSEN who left in August to become VP/News for NBC’s WTVJ-TV in Miami.

WHP/WLYH-TV, Harrisburg, PA…CRAIG HUME will be the next ND for this Newport TV owned CBS/CW duopoly. Craig’s a former ND in Los Angeles, Chicago, Orlando San Diego, and Las Vegas. He replaces CAROLINE IMLER who is leaving the station to be closer to family in North Carolina.

WHAS-TV, Louisville, KY…MARK NEERMAN is back in the ND office as he’ll take over at this Belo-owned ABC affiliate. Mark’s currently the Assistant ND at NBC’s KNTV in San Jose/San Francisco, but he’s previously been an ND in Las Vegas and Richmond. The move reunites him with GM MARK PIMENTEL, who hired him as ND at WTVR in Richmond. He replaces GENIE GARNER who left last month after two years as ND to take the ND job at KITV in Honolulu.

WNYT-TV, Albany, NY…ERIC HOPPEL has been promoted to ND at this Hubbard-owned NBC affiliate. He’s been the Assistant ND here and replaces PAUL LEWIS who left the station in August after three years as ND. Paul’s now enrolled in a master’s program at Quinnipiac University.

WYIN-TV, Merrilville, IN…RYAN PRIEST has been promoted to ND for this PBS station which airs a nightly newscast. He had been the Assistant ND, and has also worked in Evansville, IN, and Tampa. He replaces TODD HAUER who left the station in August to work in Media Relations for Valparaiso University.

WNCT-TV, Greenville, NC…MARTY VAN HOUSEN will be the next ND for this Media General owned CBS affiliate. NEW NEWS DIRECTOR NAMED:

KXLN-TV, Houston, TX…ISABEL GONZALEZ has been named ND for this Univision o-and-o. As we mentioned above, she has been the ND for sister-Univision o-and-o KUVS-TV in Sacramento. She replaces REY CHAVEZ who left the station in June after just more than one year as ND.

Two other notes. HUGO BALTA, ND for Telemundo’s WNJU-TV in Teterboro, NJ (the New York market) was laid off this week as part of NBC/Universal cutbacks. I am assuming (always dangerous) that he is not being replaced, so I have NOT listed that as an opening.

And please note that we have removed WDIV-TV in Detroit from the list of open ND positions. DEBORAH COLLURA, the VP/News for station owner Post-Newsweek, has been serving as ND here since BOB ELLIS was promoted to GM for the company’s WJXT-TV in Jacksonville. Deb tells me she’ll continue to do both jobs until at least the first of the year when the situation will be re-evalutated.

Both Corrie and GM RAY CARTER say it was a mutual decision. Carter, a former ND in Atlanta and Salt Lake City, will oversee the newsroom, with some help from MIKE DREADEN, the Managing Editor at sister-Cox station WSB-TV in Atlanta, until the search for a new news director is completed.

WWAY-TV, Wilmington, NC…veteran newsman PAUL PAOLICELLI has left this Morris-Multimedia owned ABC affiliate after two years as ND. Paul’s also been a news director in Houston, Orlando, and for the Ohio News Network, and has worked as the Washington Bureau Chief for the NBC o-and-os, and also worked in Buffalo. He’s also an author, having penned two books. (And, as of this writing, his well-written blog is still available on the station’s website!)

She worked here for seven years earlier in her career, eventually becoming Assistant News Director before leaving to become Senior Web Producer for WDAF-TV in Kansas City three years ago. Rebecca replaces PATTI McGETTIGAN who was promoted two months ago to become ND for sister-LIN station WISH-TV, the CBS affiliate in Indianapolis. Patti had been the ND in Grand Rapids for eight years.

KBCI-TV, Boise, ID…JULIE WEINDEL returns to the ND chair as she moves west to this Fisher-owned CBS affiliate. Julie’s a former ND at WHIO-TV in Dayton who’s owned her own media business since leaving WHIO more than two years ago. Julie tells me she and her husband have wanted to move to the Rockies. At KBCI, she replaces YVONNE SIMONS who left in July to become the Assistant ND at WBTV in Charlotte. Julie becomes the sixth ND here in seven years.

WBNG-TV, Binghamton, NY…CANDACE CHAPMAN has been promoted to ND for this Granite-owned CBS affiliate. She’s been the EP there as well as the anchor of the 6:00 news. Candace has also worked in Lawton, OK, and Columbia, MO. Her promotion to ND allows GREG CATLIN to concentrate on his GM duties here. BOB SELLERS, known nationally for his work on Fox News Channel and CNBC, and most recently as a morning anchor at WTTG in Washington DC, has been named a primary anchor for WSMV in Nashville.

DUCIS RODGERS makes a move to anchor for ESPN News. Ducis most recently was the primary sports anchor for WCBS in New York.

ANDREA FUJII joins the reporting team of WJZ in Baltimore. She was the weekend evening co-anchor at KSTU in Salt Lake City. Andrea has relocated with her husband, Whit Johnson.

BRETT CUMMINS returns to Little Rock and KARK to forecast the weeknight weather. Brett was the chief meteorologist with WVLA in Baton Rouge.

AMBER SULLINS joins KNXV in Phoenix as morning meteorologist. Previously, she was the morning and noon forecaster for KVIA in El Paso. Amber is a Valley "native" and a graduate of the University of Arizona.

KATISHIA COSLEY is promoted to weekend evening anchor at KIAH in Houston. Katishia has been a general assignment reporter for the station.

JONATHAN MARTIN is promoted to Saturday morning co-anchor at WSMV in Nashville. Jonathan is currently a weekday reporter for the station.

CARA CAPUANO returns to ESPN as a reporter, anchor/host and play-by-play announcer for the ESPN family of networks. Based in Charlotte, Cara will be heavily involved with the network's new Southeastern Conference package on ESPNU and ESPN Regional Television. Previously, Cara spent four years in a similar role at FSN Northwest, covering all things Seattle sports. Before the move to Seattle, The University of California graduate had a stint at ESPN as an anchor and play-by-play announcer.

CASSIDY HUBBARTH will be joining Host Charles Davis and Analysts Randy Cross & David Pollack on FSN South’s SEC Gridiron LIVE’s. Cassidy will be handling the Social Media Component, reporting from both the studio and live from games. WPIX-TV, New York City, NY...we reported this change in the number one market to you earlier this week in an emailed UPDATE. KAREN SCOTT is leaving this Tribune- owned station after ten years as ND and 16 years at the station. Today was her last day, and that departure comes just more than a week before the station launches a new 6:30 PM newscast.

WSAZ-TV, Huntington, WV...SCOTT SAXTON announced today he's leaving this NBC affiliate to become ND for Raycom's WECT-TV in Wilmington, NC (more on that below.) Scott's been the ND here since 2006 when he was promoted from Assistant ND. WSAZ is owned by Gray Television.

KRNV-TV, Reno, NV...KIRK FROSDICK has left this NBC affiliate after about 15 months as ND. Kirk's a long time Reno newsman who had been the Assignment Manager here before he was promoted to ND. KRNV is owned by Sunbelt Communications.

KGUN-TV, Tucson, AZ...he's BACK! FORREST CARR returns to this Journal owned ABC affiliate for his second stint as ND here, a job he held from until March, 2001. Since then, he's been an ND in Tampa, Ft. Myers and Albuquerque. He replaces LENA SADIWSKYJ who left the station last month after more than three years as ND.

WECT-TV, Wilmington, NC...SCOTT SAXTON is the next ND for this Raycom-owned NBC affiliate. As noted above, Scott has been ND for WSAZ-TV in Huntington, WV for the past three years. At WECT he replaces RAEFORD BROWN who left the station in July after nine years as ND.

KVBC-TV, Las Vegas, NV...we alerted you to this surprising move in a mid-week emailed UPDATE. BOB STOLDAL, longtime ND of cross-town rival KLAS-TV, has been named Executive Vice President/News for this Sunbelt Communications owned NBC affiliate. He'll also manage and coordinate the news operations of all the Sunbelt stations. Bob retired as VP/News of KLAS in 2008, ending a long career with that station, which began in 1967. He did spend a few years as ND of sister-Landmark station WTVF-TV in Nashville. Bob's a native Nevadan and an expert in the history of Las Vegas. He replaces DEBORAH CLAYTON who left KVBC last month after almost two years as ND, and spent many more years than that working at the station.

KTEN-TV, Denison, TX...we told you last week that veteran newsman CRAIG MARRS had been named GM of this NBC affiliate. We didn't know that he'll also been assuming the ND duties, at least for now. So we're removing this from our list of openings. KTEN is owned by Lockwood Broadcast Group.

Also this week, DAN GARCIA's job as ND of KAUZ-TV in Wichita Falls, TX, was eliminated after the station's owned signed a joint sales and shareds services agrement with the owners of KSWO-TV in Lawton, OK.

Geoff's been the ND for this Granite owned-NBC affiliate since July, 2007, and has also been ND for another Fresno station as well as in San Diego, Salt Lake City, and Ft. Myers. He's also worked in Pittsburgh, Washington, Denver, Miami, Richmond, and Jacksonville.

KBCI-TV, Boise, ID...YVONNE SIMONS is leaving to become the Assistant ND for WBTV in Charlotte. Yvonne's been the ND here for more than two years, and has also worked in Las Vegas, Columbus, Raleigh, Norfolk, and Champaign, IL, much of that time as a reporter and anchor. WLWT-TV, Cincinnati, OH...we told you earlier this week that BRENNAN DONNELLAN is leaving this Hearst-owned NBC affiliate after six years here. Before Cincinnati, Brennan was a news director in Syracuse. He's also worked in Boston, Atlanta, Norfolk, and Columbus, OH.

KRQE-TV, Albuquerque, NM...FORREST CARR has left this LIN-owned CBS affiliate after just ten months on the job. Forrest has also been an ND in Ft. Myers, Tucson, and Tampa.

KITV, Honolulu, HI...in another move we reported earlier this week, TOD PRITCHARD has left this Hearst owned ABC affiliate. Tod's been the ND there since 2001 and had earlier been an ND in Madison, WI.

WBNG-TV, Johnson City, NY...GREG CATLIN has been promoted to General Manager here. He's a former anchor who's been at the station for more than 25 years. WBNG is a CBS affiliate owned by Granite Broadcasting and is in the Binghamton market.

KRIV-TV, Houston, TX...as we reported earlier in the week, TOM DOERR has been named VP/News Director for this FOX o-and-o. Tom's a veteran ND who most recently had served as VP/Station Manager for CBS's Miami duopoly. He's been an ND in Houston earlier in his career, as well as in Dallas, Washington, Miami, San Antonio and Tulsa, and also spent three years as a consultant with AR&D. At KRIV, he replaces KATHY WILLIAMS who left the station in March after seven years as ND. She's now the Assistant ND for KPRC-TV in Houston.

WGNO-TV, New Orleans, LA...RICK ERBACH returns to the ND chair as he moves to The Big Easy and this Tribune-owned ABC affiliate. Rick most recently was ND for WGCL-TV in Atlanta, a job he left about a year ago. Rick's also been an ND in St. Louis, and worked for CNN Newssource. He replaces BOB NOONAN who left the station in May to become Assistant ND for WREG-TV in Memphis.

KCEN-TV, Victoria, TX...DON BRADLEY is the new ND for this Saga Communications owned ABC affiliate. Don had been ND for KCEN-TV in Waco until last May. Previously he spent 16 years as an ND in Ft. Wayne. He's also worked in Memphis, St. Louis, Louisville, and Hartford/New Haven. At KCEN, he replaces DOUG TISDALE who left the station in May.

He's joining Calamari Productions. The move reunites him with KAREN GRAU who heads the company: they've worked together in the past. Kevin was promoted to ND here in February, 2007.

KDKA-TV, Pittsburgh, PA...we emailed you about this move on Thursday: COLEEN MARREN will be the next ND for this CBS o-and-o. Coleen most recently was the ND for Hearst's WCVB-TV in Boston, a job she left at the end of 2008. She'd been the ND there for eight years and had earlier served as an ND in Milwaukee and Hartford. She replaces JOHN VERRILLI who traveled the reverse path and headed to Boston as ND for a sister CBS o-and-o, WBZ-TV, earlier this year after four years as ND for KDKA.

WJAR-TV, Providence, RI...CHRIS LANNI has been named Content Brand Manager for this Media General owned NBC affiliate. He replaces longtime 'JAR ND BETTY JO CUGINI who was laid off from the station last April after eight years as ND.

KGPE-TV, Fresno, CA...CHAD McCOLLUM has been promoted to ND for this Newport-owned CBS affiliate. He had been the Assistant ND here, and has previously worked in San Diego and Los Angeles.
